Written by Billboard Staff — Brooklyn’s Verboten nightclub has reportedly been shut down for “nonpayment of taxes.”
The New York state government seized the property at 54 N 11th Street on Wednesday (March 30) and locked-up the venue, according to social media reports.
A notice was posted on the venue's door which reads, “This property has been seized for nonpayment of taxes, and is now in the possession of the state of New York. Any person who attempts to tamper or interfere with this property will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.”
The Rite Of Wednesdays event that was scheduled to take place Wednesday night was reportedly moved to the Halcyon store. The eye-catching “seized” sign can be seen below.
Reps for the venue have yet to respond to the development and the taxation department was not able to be reached at deadline.
Verboten’s promoters billed the venue -- a two-room, 10,000 square foot former metal shop -- as Brooklyn’s “home for underground music and events.” The brand, established more than a decade earlier by Jen Schiffer and her husband John Perez, opened the doors to a “permanent” home in March 2014.
