Presented by former Vice President of West End Records, Adam Cruz, "Mel Cheren, AIDS and The Paradise Garage: An art and culture exhibit" explores the artistic work of disco music pioneer, gay activist, and painter, Mel Cheren. The exhibit highlights over a dozen of Cheren's own HIV/AIDS related paintings and because of its importance in dance music history and in Cheren’s life, this exhibit will also feature authentic raw footage of The Paradise Garage, the famed NYC nightclub he financially backed with partner, Michael Brody, and the incredible music of West End Records.

Installation by Stuart Pearman and Eddie Nicholas

The Open Doors Artists' Studios and Available Space Tour is an annual event organized by the Newark Arts Council. The Tour features a number of curated and juried exhibitions highlighting artists from Newark and surrounding areas while showcasing available artists' space; performance art; a rare look into artists' studios and a crawl through Newark's numerous and diverse art galleries.

Newark’s flourishing art scene is comprised of diverse galleries, cultural outlets and a large number of independent artists. The Newark Arts Council unites these entities and will showcase them during the Eleventh Annual Open Doors Studio Tour, October 4-21, 2012.

Following the vast successes of past years’ Open Studios Tours, this year’s celebration of the arts in New Jersey’s largest city will once again include tours of dozens of local galleries and participating artists’ studios and major exhibitions. Available spaces will be showcased, and creative, temporary gallery installations will undoubtedly be full of colorful and thoughtful pieces.

This multi-media exhibit was produced in collaboration with the Newark Arts Council, Open Doors Studio Tour 2012, Lincoln Park Coast Cultural District, Brent Nicholson Earle and The Coffee Cave Gallery.
